Description
In collaboration with WV poet Elaine Blue.
"My mommie wants me to read books, speak to old people, eat cinnamon toast, drink milk, and make my bed. My mommie wants me to take vitamins, keep my shoes tied, not use cuss words, and make my bed. My mommie wants me to have good dreams, not scream, wear clean underwear, comb my hair, believe in God, say my prayers, and make my bed. My mommie don't want me to do nothing as she parts the sheet from the spread, I sleep on the couch cause I ain't got no bed."
Barrie and Blue exhibited their works together often, receiving funding for an exhibit featuring the stories of homeless people presented at the Painted Bride in Philidelphia, PA and an artist's grant through the Kentucky Foundation for Women to portray the stories of the elderly living in nursing homes. Many of these works have been executed in style akin to German Expressionists, raw with energy, direct and highly exxagerated, often with a central, floating figure surrounded by swirling lines and a multitude of symbolic elements. There is a feeling of vulnerability that pervades these works. This work enters into the psychological world of the individual, and uncovers the turmoil and insecurity within. -Jenine Culligan, Senior Curator
