Barrie is a multimedia artist living in the heart of Appalachia, devoted to sharing stories of the natural world and its beauty, as well as the current imbalance it faces. Her work in printmaking, painting, ceramic and glass sculpture draw upon her experience with the environmental problems facing this region and our planet as a whole. In 2014, the town in which she lives experienced a toxic water poisoning in which coal cleaning chemicals seeped into our water source and stuck to our pipes, resulting in months without potable water. Since then, her art has become a platform to reflect upon the importance of water and the issues that surround it, while creating a conversation that both challenges and uplifts the viewer. Some have described her artwork as chaotic with forms, lines and symbols jumbled together mirroring the abuse of the environment, while others have appreciated her exploration of light and dark themes in order to tell the story of our current humanity.
