Local artist, Kali Picard, has often derived inspiration from her Cajun heritage and love for history. Having participated in several prestigious shows and festival such as The Big Easel, Archives Exhibition’s: Whimsy, and Basin Arts’ Lineage Collection, Kali enjoys being a part of the ever growing community of artists Lafayette has cultivated.
Not only is she a practicing artist, but also a teaching artist. Kali has set up camps, fostered partnerships with UL LIFE, PediaTrust, Montessori of Acadiana, Lafayette Public Library, and The Quad to bring about inclusion within the arts through her business Borderless Color.
Artist Statement: Local Artist, Kali Picard, transforms historical paintings into whimsical adventures through the lens of a South Louisiana Native. You can find Marie Antoinette with an opossum upon her head, or da Vinci’s portrait of Celelia Gallerina (the favored mistress of the Duke of Milan) holding an opossum shrouded by magnolias. Her works are embedded with irreverent humor and the focus is to have the viewer find joy, even if for a moment. The pieces also serve as a reminder that art can be so much more than decor; it is to spark conversation and meaningful reflection.
