From an article in the times Arts & Leisure section: "The artist Lorraine O'Grady first made a splash wielding a whip. She's still making people pay attention." She is a conceptual artist getting her first retrospective show. She started her art career at 45. For four decades she has played a pivotal role, clearing her own terrain at the hinge of feminist, Conceptual and Black art. "I am somebody who is moving from one idea, to the next, to the next." The sculptor Simone Leigh called her a trailblazer. "Lorraine's pioneering makes clear that an artist must be uncompromising and brave." As soon as I saw her photo and read her story, I started sketching.
