Conceptually the diameter of the rounds are to represent the size of a porthole, quietly referencing the marine industry in Newfoundland while framing the idea of the vast sky that hold us all in place.
VERSO
‘Verso’ paintings are acrylic, archival inks + graphite on raw Belgian linen. An innovative technique, Houston stretches the linen that engages the warp + weft, the idea is sketched and painted in reverse - giving the paint and material agency. Once the reverse layers are carefully established, the linen is removed from the round strainer frame and turned over, re stretched in the intended orientation. A second painting is done on the front of the linen engaging the layers and pigments that were initially pressed through.
