Conceptually the diameter of the rounds are to represent the size of a porthole, quietly referencing the marine industry in Newfoundland while framing the idea of the vast sky that hold us all in place.
VERSO
‘Verso’ paintings are acrylic, archival inks + graphite on raw Belgian linen. An innovative technique, Houston stretches the linen that engages the warp + weft, the idea is sketched and painted in reverse - giving the paint and material agency. Once the reverse layers are carefully established, the linen is removed from its stretcher bars and turned over, re stretched in the intended orientation. A second painting is done on the front of the linen enchains the layers and pigments that were initially press through. The outcome is an ethereal, dreamlike haze that engage the viewer to hold their own memories and narratives of familiar landscapes.
