Small islands hold special significance for me. When my children were growing up, we had a spacious old pontoon boat. On weekends, we took them and their friends to an island on Squam Lake in my state of origin, New Hampshire. On weekends, they all would swim and play and devour the picnic we brought along. I can still hear their laughter and feel the joy of their growing up together in such a natural place.
I am in love with small islands and the memories they hold. The peaceful island in this painting could be almost anywhere, but it is one of the nameless small islands that sprout from Lake Lanier in Cumming, GA. It was painted plein air in the very early morning as the mist rose with the light. It is offered for sale in a custome frame with a beveled mat especially designed for works done in soft pastel.
Note: This work is currently appearing in the Forsyth County Arts and Culture exhibit, "Chasing the Light": An Exhibit of Plein Air Artists". It will be available for sale during this time with pick up after September 5. You can view this Exhibit at the galleries of the Fulton County Government Center, 141 Pryor St, SW, Atlanta, GA from July 7- August 29, 2025.
