Painting the traditional west alive today North of the boarder.
Message'Out of the Dust' is an original oil painting of my husband Lane Fritz as he drags in a calf in the branding trap. I was drawn to this piece for the strong light and shadow casted by the afternoon sun and the tension created as the rider looks over his shoulder and the horse marches forward.
Looking at this scene brings me back to this branding day and I can still smell the pungent odor of singed hair from the branding iron as the dust and smoke from the fire swirl in the heat. It was a blistering hot day, too hot to do anything I would have thought, but these cowboys had a job to get done no matter the weather.
The life of a cowboy may seem glamorous to the world, there's always been a sense of romance associated with a cowboys, but these guys don't get to ride off into the sunset. They have, what I would suspect, is one of the most physically demanding and dangerous employments today. They work from before the dawn to after sunset daily, riding long hard miles in all extremes of weather. The cowboy isn't paid much, often not much more than a roof over their heads, but they ride for the brand with a pride of job well done.
