When the City of Thornton decided to build the Active Adult Center (55+ center), the City's vision included public art.
"Skywards" is a giant flower that stretches towards the sky. The sculpture is installed near the building's entrance, greeting guests as they arrive.
The flower petals are made of dichroic glass. The color of the glass shifts between green, blue, purple, and pink depending on the angle of light. At different times of day, "Skywards" might be reflecting colors onto the building and landscaping, or casting colorful shadows onto the ground - much like stained glass.
The sculpture was made by Skunk Control, a group of artists from Australia. Skunk Control fuses science and art in their creations, spreading joy and wonder with their art.
