Ellen Mueller, Leisure Tests (2021), digital video, 12:44 minutes
In this series of short video works, the artist considers the Mississippi River as a place for both leisure and commercial activities. Visually, the work combines imagery of the river, barge tie-offs, shorelines, bridges, and other site-specific markers with people embracing leisurely activities. Through juxtaposition, repetition, glitches, and shifts in opacity to complicate the landscapes and human forms, the artist draws attention to the way this particular landscape has been inextricably bound up in capitalist forms and modes. Shifts in seasons frame short sporadic efforts towards leisure, with each one resulting in a failed attempt.
Performers: Kaya Lovestrand, Grover Hogan, Non Edwards, and Erika Hansen.
