Jil Evans begins with observations of the natural world, having spent hours exploring the rivers, bogs, and waterways of Minnesota. In the studio, she works from photographs and sketches made in the field. Using combinations of shapes, forms, colors, and movements found in observations, she creates abstract paintings whose compositions are grounded in the landscapes of Minnesota.
The Diver series was inspired by the organic debris and surface reflections found in the flooded Minnesota and Cannon Rivers. Jil overlaid images with observations of natural light from a variety of environments to create paintings with narratives of cause-and-effect relationships. The paintings are intended to provoke thoughts, feelings, and sensations that move one to experience the power of what lives inside all of us.
Through the process of abstraction, Jil makes paintings that offer a place for the viewer to reside. The choices made in creating new images must have some correspondence with one’s inner life for meaningful vitality to emerge. It is Jil’s hope that experiencing these paintings will affirm the immensity of the viewer's inner life.
