Jean-Paul Sartre on the Pont des Arts, Paris, 1946.
In this beautifully composed photograph Sartre (1905-1980), the iconic philosopher, playwright, novelist, critic and father of French existentialism, is keeping an eye out for his equally legendary partner, feminist philosopher and author Simone de Beauvoir. Like Sartre, our eye is drawn to the misty dome of the Institut de France at the far side of the pedestrian bridge. The Palais du Louvre is immediately behind photographer Cartier-Bresson.
This superb photograph looks like a rich platinum print with warm tones and a fantastic tonal range.
A genuine vintage photogravure, printed in Paris in 1963. Archivally mounted on 100% acid-free board and in a black 11"x14" wooden frame..
