This iconic photo, one of Albert Watson's most famous images, was conceived during a shoot for a Gap ad campaign in 1992. Spotting a model with a "perfect" face, Watson arranged a separate session with the boy's mother. A metallic dye was used, transforming his appearance and six images were taken before the boy decided he was bored and the shoot ended. Captured with a standard lens on a large-format 8"x10" camera, only one foot from the boy's face, the resulting photograph has a stunning, surreal look. The stark lighting and the boy's direct, compelling gaze create a powerful, statue-like effect, elevating the simple portrait into a conceptually striking work of art. It is celebrated as a key example of Watson's imaginative vision and technical mastery.
Image size 143 x 107 cm. Large signature on reverse, numbered 3/12. Inscribed: "Golden Boy / 6 Years Old New York City / 1992", visible through window on reverse of black wooden frame.
