In 1940, Dorothea Lange became the first woman to be awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and decided to spend time working with the Amish community in Iowa.
Being a personal project, as opposed to her Government work, very few of the resulting photographs were preserved, documented and seen by the public. As ever with Lange, this extremely rare image of nine boys and their white horse repays close attention. The twins on the upper right appear to be home on leave from the Navy, and are surrounded by three younger siblings who look intent on following in their footsteps. The "pale horse" splitting the family surely needs no explanation. Meanwhile the eldest boy on the upper left appears to be contemplating his duty to remain and run the farm and miss his chance to see the world beyond? A brilliant image.
This is a genuine vintage photogravure, printed in 1972. Archivally mounted on 100% acid-free board, matted to 8" x 10" and in a black wooden frame.
