Perhaps the best known of the images from the now legendary collaboration between Salvador Dali and portrait photographer Phillipe Halsman which began in the early 1940s. One of 28 "takes" this is the original image printed prior to being heavily retouched.
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was one of the original Surrealists from the 1920s together with Max Ernst, Man Ray, Luis Buñuel, Joan Miró and Marcel Duchamp. A larger-than-life personality and showman, he was renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship and the striking and bizarre images in his work.
Negative taken in 1948, printed later. Halsman initials, copyright symbol and date on left. Matted to 8"x10" in a black wooden frame.
