Halsman was born in Riga in 1906 and was an émigré in Paris in the 1930s before finding world fame in New York from the 1940s. With a quirky style and an amazing ability to put his subjects at ease, he became one of the foremost portrait photographers of his generation, including producing a staggering 101 covers for Life Magazine.
