The portrait is part of my "Inner Portraits" series. I wanted to pay homage to her Vietnamese heritage, picking up a portion of an inlay piece of art she owns that tells the story of national heros, the TrĘ°ng sisters. They were military leaders who led the first resistance movement against the occupying Chinese who dominated Vietnam for 247 years. The sisters ruled for three years after rebelling in AD 40. The inlay was Mother-of-Pearl in black wood. I painted the portrait using colors from Mother-of-Pearl to tie her tightly with her heritage. Having fled Vietnam with her family as a child, this woman has shown her own strength throughout her life that I wanted to honor.
