Using traditional watercolor, I applied it freely, without a sketch to guide me. The result reminded me of a landscape leading my mind to think of my photographs of deer who wonder through our yard: Mother & twins in Spring; several grazing year-round on bushes, berries, and plants; and herds of bucks traveling together in Summer. The challenge was to determine a method to incorporate portions of these images into my painting. Where to place them, how to tell the story of their lives? Testing with various locations I selected where each belonged and added a sketch in each location. Once the deer were painted, I incorporated minimal revisions to the abstract background to make a dreamy location for them to live.
