This piece is inspired by the color of the wonderful wine called Claret. My favorite was made by St. Francis winery near where I live but it is no longer being produced. Sadly.
The process for creating these sculpted pieces: I re-purposed a piece of 80 ft. sheer polyester fabric with the composition of my painting "Orange" see Inventory # 2008-03. A piece of fabric (polyester) is drenched in laytex paint which acts as a barrier and adheres the fabric to a canvas. The larger the piece of fabric, the more dynamic the shape becomes. The wet fabric is manipulated around to create peaks and valleys until an interesting shape and texture emerges. Once it is dry, I paint it with oils to create variations in one or more colors. A bit of the fabric was left untouched and is still visible on the piece.
