Created by understanding that …1) Jesus is “The Path,” and 2) I get to determine my own Path.
I began this 30” x 40” oil sketch based on the phantasmagorical painting by Henri Rousseau, “Tiger in A Tropical Storm, Surprised.” this too began with academic issues (sketch, proportion, color recipes, underpainting, etc.) that require some skill that I try to boil down into very simplistic mini-sketches …I felt ready to go all in as it was not yet satisfactory. Borrow from other admired artists: After Joan Mitchell, another favorite: Willem, and Elaine de Kooning. Theirs and my beginning painting are close enough in composition, that the de Kooning inspiration could be super-imposed on the Rousseau inspiration. What a cool mix. So I went to work. The courage to experiment without worry about the end result does not happen automatically. It takes courage to throw myself in to a piece with wild abandon and confidence that the result will be worth it. Much like the lessons of “The Secret.”
After about 1 hour into the “restoration,” I quit before I messed it all up. Once this layer dried I “drew” on some thick lines of paint to accent overall. It isn’t a copy of either the Rousseau or the de Kooning: It is mine, but with their voices in my brushwork. The title is also from a combination of various influences: Bright: Joyful, optimistic, beautiful. Path: Jesus is the Christ, my Savior. Shining: The Light of the Christ illuminates the Path.
To me it needs to be viewed vertically v. horizontally, but totally up to viewer preference.
Another masterpiece. This time, I recognized as soon as I finished it, how wonderful it is. It took several layers of paint to get it to this point and I changed my view a few times as I was creating it.
