This painting was inspired by a Virginia Woolf quote that was used as an introduction to a book I was reading at the time I painted it entitled “The Power of Meaning” and it really took root in my mind. To me, this is the purpose of creating art, to bring little sparks of light into the darkness, much like striking a match.
"What is the meaning of life? That was all—a simple question; one that tended to close in on one with the years. The great revelation had never come. The great revelation perhaps never did come. Instead there were little daily miracles, illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark; here was one." —Virginia Woolf
