The title of this piece comes from the physical reality of its creation; wherein the crochet material “growing” over its surface is only possible because the metal has “decayed” and left holes and structures that give the fiber a way to attach. It is a reminder that in all of life, growth is only possible through the destruction–the breaking down–of something else. For our bodies to grow, we must consume food, thereby destroying other life forms for our own benefit. To build a house, we must harvest trees for lumber, crush rock for gravel, and burn fuel for transportation. Growth happens, therefore, via decay.
