Alysn Midgelow-Marsden
Auckland, Aotearoa
Inspirer, energiser, facilitator and maker of lyrical, fluid sculptural works using textile based techniques.
MessageCollection: SeaMistress
An ongoing collection encompassing wall based, free standing and hanging works inspired by the combination of 3 words - 'sea' (my coastal and marine base), 'seam' (my textile base), and 'mistress' (someone you love 'on the side' perhaps, but who loves you back, is maybe a little frivolous and over the top). Exploring the interplay between nature, connection, and the emotional resonance of living by the sea. These these sculptural forms evoke the intricate patterns found in natural marine environments—coral, seaweed, and tidal traces. The shimmering gilded surfaces reflect light like sunlight on water, while the delicate openwork structures suggest fragility and interconnection. These pieces speak to the ways in which we are tethered to each other and to our environment, mimicking the invisible threads of connection that bind us emotionally, socially, with resonances of fluidity, vulnerability, and wonder. The tactile act of shaping wire, layering latex, applying gilding and pearls echoes the slow, transformative processes of the natural world. As I work, I find myself immersed in memories of the sea, of walking along the shore and feeling its immense power and calmness simultaneously. These sculptures are both personal meditations and invitations for you to pause, look closer, and connect to inner worlds.
Alysn is an interdisciplinary artist working across textile, sculpture and installation to create lyrical, magical works which celebrate connections.
