Peggy Chung created a unique wooden lectern for the Wedding Room. It combines form and function, with multiple legs sculpted from two distinct shapes joining to form a stable foundation, symbolizing the unity of marriage.
The top of the lectern is on a pivot. The simple act of rotating this surface to facilitate the signing of marriage certificates shifts the active role in the ceremony from the wedding officiant to the couple being married, signifying the completion of the ceremony and the beginning of the marriage.
Using the traditional fine woodworking techniques of mortise and tenon, and frame and panel, the artist carved the lectern from mahogany grown in sustainable forests.
