Artist’s Statement: The Bay Area’s spirit of activism has inspired political movements and activists worldwide. Here, Elbert “Big Man” Howard, one of the founders of the Black Panther Party, signs a copy of the photojournalistic piece by Stephen Shames. I have always been inspired by the history of grassroots organizing that built the Black Panther party, and felt honored to have the opportunity to photograph someone who has inspired so many to action.
