Artist’s Statement: These monotypes were created in single passes through the press using the viscosity technique, in which inks of varying thickness resist each other on the plate. The textures and juxtapositions of color that result from this commingling of inks are rich and organic, dense yet breathing, like those found in nature. The images that emerge in the process are often landscapes, both figural and abstract, arising like dreams out of some deep reservoir of memory and experience distilled to their essences. The specific details of the place or object is not what is remembered; what arises is a feeling—of immutable nature, of vastness and distance, of the movement of air and wind, of heat and cold and silence, of the breathing of plants and water and stone.
