“I chose Elma Lewis because she’s made important contributions in art for black and minority communities. I am graduating from Boston Arts Academy, which has named its new building after her to commemorate her. My art was made to celebrate her and her value to the arts.
Elma Lewis had parents who immigrated from Barbados, and I have many family members who have came from Barbados. Therefore I can relate to her not only as a creative but identity-wise. Elma Lewis founded the NCAAA, meaning the National Center of Afro-American Artists. She’s paved the way for visual artists like me but also gave performing artists a platform to learn and create. Living in Boston, there are many art centers who honor her or have been influenced by her, which makes her an icon in Boston.”
