Cup plate, 5.5 inches diameter (14cm). Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Whittaker & Co. The inclusion of "England" dates this pattern to after 1890. This pattern features a central quatrefoil cartouche which contains a scene with sailboats on the water and a village along the shoreline in the background. The cartouche is superimposed over a bramble of wild roses.
Whittaker & Co. was a brief series of partnerships of earthenware manufacturers, operating the Hallfield Pottery, built in 1882) in Hanley, Staffordshire. The original partners were Lewis Whittaker, James Edge, Samuel Heath, John Henry Weatherby, and Robert Rowley. Whittaker, Edge & Co.: 1882-1886. Whittaker & Co.: 1886-1892.
