Trivet, 7 x 7 inches. Blue transfer. Maker is J. Dimmock & Co. The registry diamonds indicates a registration date of 7 June 1880. The pattern features an asymmetrical arrangement of cartouches filled with elements from nature. The central cartouche, a square with inverted corners, features a male and female roe deer with two fawns in a forest. The circular cartouche to the left contains a highly-stylized foliage motif. The double-circle cartouche contains an image of a songbird perched amongst shrubs with three different types of flowers. The fan-shaped cartouche contains flowers and foliage, including chrysanthemums and a form that looks like an upturned turnip. The border consists of an outer ring of the key-fret pattern and an larger inner ring of pyramidal shapes with shading giving a 3-dimenional illusion.

John Dimmock and Co. of the Albion Works in Hanley was a large producer of earthenware. The old established firm of Thomas Dimmock & Co. held three manufactories: one in Hanley, adjoining the New Market house, formerly James Whitehead’s, afterwards J. and W. Handley’s; another on the upper end of Shelton, formerly of Edmund John Birch, afterwards of Christopher Whitehead; and an enameling and gilding establishment adjoining the King’s Head at Shelton.
