Tile, 8 x 8 inches. Underglaze painted in blue. Printed maker's mark for Minton's Art Pottery Studio in Kensington, Gore, London, England. Designed by William Stephen Coleman (1829-1904), this pattern features a cherubic baby holding a necklace while sitting on the ground surrounded by ferns and flowers.
Minton's Art Pottery Studio was set up in Kensington Gore, London, for the decoration of pottery and tiles. The wares were all individually hand painted. It lasted only a few years because the studio burnt down in 1875. According to an annotation on the reverse of the studio's trade card, the first director was W S Coleman, the next Eldon, and the last Colonel Stuart-Wortley.
