Plate, 9 inches diameter. Black transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed and impressed marks for Bates, Gildea & Walker. The registry diamond dates the registration of this pattern to 12 April 1880. The pattern name "Teheran" is a reference to the capital city of Iran. Appropriately, the pattern design is Islamic in inspiration, with highly stylized flowers and leaves. A medallion-like flower sits in the center and is surrounded by swirling spirals of jagged leaves with protruding buds. The well is bordered by a fret band and the border consists of alternating images of the same medallion flowers and smaller stylized flowers with an arching cage of jagged leaves.
In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates & Walker. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 James Gildea continued the business alone.
