Plate, 8 inches diameter. Black transfer. Printed maker's mark for Bates, Gildea & Walker. This is a complex pattern with six layers of motifs in the center circling the star flower for which it was named. All of these motifs are repeated in the border. The larger panels contain the inner three layers of motifs, and the fourth layer with teardrop shaped flowers fills the narrow panel. The outer two borders of the center serve as borders for the connected border panels.
In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates & Walker. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 James Gildea continued the business alone.
