Platter, 13 x 9.25 inches. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for G. W. Turner & Sons. The outside border includes areas which appear to be peeled back, exposing another layer underneath that is identical to the inner border of stylized flowers on a pebble-like background. Areas of the outer border which are not exposed contain circular and hexagonal cartouches of sailboats on the water. The remaining areas are equally intricate and varied, featuring flowers and birds. The center scene features a scene of a sailboat in stormy seas.

From 1861 to 1873 as Turner & Tomkinson when Tomkinson retired and the business was carried on by George Wardle Turner and his sons under the style of G.W. Turner & Sons. From c. 1887 to 1892 they also operated at the Alexandra Pottery, Scotia Road, Tunstall.
