Platter, 15.5 x 10.5 inches. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for G. W. Turner & Sons. This pattern in the "Phileau" series features different water scenes. This pattern contains one large oval cartouche of rocky shoreline at the sea as well as smaller cartouches in the border. In the larger cartouche boats can be seen in the distance. There is a geometric border of small circles and floral snippets around the center oval cartouche. The border has four different cartouches pertaining to the sea: lighthouse, sailboats and rocky shore. Geometric and floral elements are placed between the border cartouches.

From 1861 to 1873 as Turner & Tomkinson when Tomkinson retired and the business was carried on by George Wardle Turner and his sons under the style of G.W. Turner & Sons. From c. 1887 to 1892 they also operated at the Alexandra Pottery, Scotia Road, Tunstall. "The goods produced were ordinary printed and enamelled earthenware in dinner, toilet, and other services for the home and colonial markets." Jewitt's Ceramic Art of Great Britain 1800-1900
