Tray, brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Tundley, Rhodes & Procter. This Japanesque pattern features a collection of paired cartouches and floral springs. One cartouche pair consists of a cube decorated with stylized floral and geometric designs and a circular cartouche with an image of a crane in the water bordered by plants. The other cartouche pair features a rectangular cartouche with an image of a sailboat on the water with mountains in the background and a tree-lined shore in the foreground and an oddly-shaped cartouche decorated with stylized floral and geometric designs. Between these pairs of cartouches are small sprigs of flowers, one hawthorn and the other cherry.
The Swan Bank Pottery passed successively through the hands of Thomas Edwards, Messrs. Pinder Bourne & Co, Messrs. Beech and Hancock, now of Tunstall, and Messrs. Hancock, Whittingham and Hancock, now of Stoke. In 1873 they came into the hands of Messrs. Tundley, Rhodes and Procter. The goods produced were printed enameled and gilt earthenware of the useful classes in all the usual services for the Russian and South American markets.
