Plate, 8 inches diameter. Black transfer. No maker's mark, but the maker can be determined by the registry diamond date of 21 June 1881, the date when Gildea & Walker registered a printed pattern. In Japanese, daimio means butterfly, as it is one of a genus with that name. It also means a feudal lord of Japan who was a large land owner. The pattern consists of a sheet pattern of scrolls and flourishes with several small round cartouches or mon, each filled with either a butterfly, flower, or chick.

In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates & Walker. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 James Gildea continued the business alone.
