This 30" x 24" oil paint on canvas by Oklahoma-based artist James Cobb has all of the elements of a classic still life. This can be summed up by the balance of both natural and man-made objects and a composition which overall emphasizes texture, scale and light. One of the most notable objects in this still life is the 'fu dog', or 'foo dog'; the deep green and gold figure is not actually a dog at all, but a traditional Chinese guardian lion that is used to ward off negative spirits as well as protect and ensure one's wealth and prosperity. The vibrant yellows of the sunflower contrast well with the deep red of the background, similar to the bright blue vase to the left side of the composition.
