This 16" x 20" oil painting on canvas titled "Opium Trade" by Oklahoma-based artist James Cobb is a vivid, energetic still life. The rich orange and pink hues of the poppies contrast against the deep blues and browns. The head of Buddha in the center is pictured with the eyes half closed with a soft smile, often meant to symbolize a kind of prolonged stillness or tranquility and creating a juxtaposition in both color relationships and artistic concept. The opium pipe to the right of the Buddha bust is thematic; opium has been both prohibited in Buddhism and historically integrated into Chinese monasteries for centuries, particularly during the Tang and Song dynasties. The work is framed with a simple black frame which measures 20" x 24".
