The City of Northfield seeks a mural artist or artist team to paint a mural along the west side of the pedestrian bridge of the Cannon River. 


The artwork should speak to Northfield’s spirit of community and belonging, celebrating the city’s investment in shared public spaces and civic pride. This commission is part of Northfield’s ongoing commitment to building a vibrant, accessible, and community-rooted public art collection.


Award Info:

Total budget is up to $20,000, inclusive of all materials, travel, and all other project-related costs. The artist is required to complete the artwork in a professional manner and is responsible for preparing the wall for the mural - this includes powerwashing and preparing a basecoat of paint. The artist is responsible for all materials related to the project’s execution.

Eligibility Criteria:


  • Preference will be given to artists residing in Minnesota

  • Must have prior mural experience

  • Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.

  • Preferred: experience engaging with stakeholder groups

Application Requirements:

Artists should demonstrate previous mural painting experience, with examples of their previous work. Examples of previous work should include: date of completion, dimensions of mural, and the location of the work. 

Rules and Terms:

  • Selected artist should be willing to collaborate with stakeholders to develop a final design
  • Design should reflect themes related to the Northfield community
  • No design proposal is required in the initial application
  • Artists without mural experience will not be considered
  • Selection will be made by the Public Art Review Committee (PARC), with members from the Northfield Arts and Culture Commission and individuals affiliated with the riverfront and related areas
