We parked on the side of a narrow, four wheel drive road in Big Bend National Park and watched clouds converge, dissipate, then build anew over Burro Mesa. The gray, late afternoon winter sky over the desert made the red rockslides on the mesa resonate above the greasewood flats, a symphony of color in a "colorless" landscape. I had to paint the sky's activity very quickly, as it kept changing. Next came the shadows in the mountains, which indicate motion just as the clouds do. Only then could I relax into my tiny painting and add detail and pops of color before the sun set.
