As we drove thru Big Bend National Park on this late December afternoon, clouds built and morphed over the mountains, uncertain what kind of sky they meant to create. We pulled over near the base of the road up into the Chisos Basin and I quickly set up and began painting. This started as a skyscape, and I spent a great amount of my painting time capturing those wayward clouds. Then the light began flirting with the rolling hills, and, breaking all the rules of plein air painting, (decide what your painting is going to be about, then stick with it!) I abandoned the sketchy pattern of light and shadow I'd put in, then concentrated on the glow that gilded the landscape for those last few moments of afternoon.
