The growing season in the high desert is short, and wildflowers must quickly grow, bloom and go to seed. No time to waste!
This 10" x 8" unframed drawing is matted under ivory archival matboard to outer dimensions of 14" x11" to fit a readymade frame.
I like to draw wildflowers in colored pencils because they allow me to render detail, life-sized and smaller, while still using rich color. I draw very lightly, then gradually add light layers of color, which I burnish (rub) to produce a complex pattern of different hues. By using several colors to produce just one, I allow the viewer's eyes to interact with my drawing by intuitively blending what they see.
