James is a Southwestern oil painter and passionate art educator living in Monument Valley, Utah.
About the Artist
"With every stroke I paint, my soul is both emptied and filled. Sharing my unbounded awe for the natural beauty of this planet is my passion and purpose. Heaven knows we need it; I need it, and have found such visual pondering to be a peaceful and powerful antidote to the stress and complexity of life."
James L Johnson earned a BFA from BYU-Idaho in 2008, and and an MFA from the Academy of Art University in 2012. He has won numerous awards for his work, including a recent honorable mention and full-page feature in the December issue of Southwest Art magazine. His influences include Edgar Payne, Vincent Van Gogh, Walter Rane, Albin Veselka, Josh Clare, Leon Parson, and Mian Situ. He lives, paints and teaches in Monument Valley, Utah amid the delicious scenery of that Southwestern region. His greatest ally in art is his wife, Crystal Johnson (also an artist). You can follow her work at crystalj.net.
