There is a version of the natural world that precedes human culture and that continues to exist parallel to a world that is shaped by its utility to us. It does not need our attention, it does not register our absence. “No witness” is an invitation to spend time in the presence of this world, it does not require your interpretation nor asks for it. The wilderness, at its most itself, is not a metaphor for anything. It does not symbolise resilience or freedom or the sublime — it simply is those things, indifferently, without audience.
