In 2021, Terrill Welch released 28 new paintings and sold 44 from her available inventory and by commission. This trajectory has been steadily building since she began painting full-time in 2010. Inspired by Edith Point Conservation Area on Mayne Island

This 35 hectares of seaside trails has long been enjoyed by local Mayne Island residents at the welcome of the Graves family who have stewarded the lands since the 1990’s. Now, with the hard work of many including the Graves family, the Mayne Island Conservancy and the National Conservancy of Canada this delicate ecosystem in Coast Salish territory will be preserved. Edith Point has inspired many paintings over the years but most often the specific location was not shared due to it being private land where I had special access as a Mayne Island community member. Now, with its new conservation status, it feels right to share these paintings as a body of work. Learn more on the Nature Conservancy Canada website.

Inspired by Saint John Point Park Reserve on Mayne Island

As a landscape painter I have places that I revisit over time finding something new to brush onto a canvas for board. One of these places is the Saint John Point Park Reserve. These paintings range from 2018 up until today. I hope you enjoy the variety and exploration of this unique ecosystem located within Coast Salish Territory. Thanks and recognition to the Mayne Island Conservancy and the family who owned this property for working so hard towards its park status. Seafloor series

In this intimate close up landscape series of the seafloor (or sea floor), I research my subject by sitting and observing on location at our island beaches and gathering photographic references and video to later use in the studio. For this series I am applying the perspectives of ‘landscape of the small’ and ‘a child’s view’ in my paintings. The paintings are completed in various sizes using elements from several images, videos, my memory and a few plein air studies. In this reparative, nature-centric, autoethnographic painting practice-led research, my intention for these paintings is to continue to find ways to enhance my sense of inner peace through nature. This series aims to connect us with nature's quiet yet profound rhythms, offering a visual meditation on the resilience and grace found within the sea and along its shores.

Thriving in Place is to fully live, grow and evolve right where I am. It is to honour the desire and ability to reach deep beneath the surface of all aspects of our natural world in my painting practice with revelry. I rejoice in what each day offers close to home on our small island off the southwest coast of Canada. Thriving in Place is a celebration of my everyday and the ordinary. I have enough and I am enough, today, with where I am and who I am. Methods and approaches will vary while my intention holds steady.
