Autoritratto nell´Universo, 1987

After meeting Agnes Ellert in her flat - perhaps I had reopened my Heart to tales of my family - so much so that that night I had several nightmares...I was in the garden of the Villa Medici in Rome when after a Maria Callas concert, as if by mysterious dramatic coincidence, my whole biological family, especially my sister and father, wanted to strangle me. I struggled not a little in freeing myself from their grasp and finally the image that I later painted appeared (see Aprés Villa Medici), but primarily with this sketch, which said, "Don't mind them, YOU HAVE ME as a cosmic stellar structure that makes you immortal!" Sweating desperately, I got out of bed to record this Sacred Spirit, and the next morning Mario Schifano, my protector at that time, had already ordered his assistant to bring me 2 canvases 120x150cm on which I made the final work. This sketch has, as you see, white ribbons protecting the vulnerable joints of my body: knees, hip, stomach, liver and shoulders.

Dopo aver incontrato Agnes Ellert nella sua abitazione - forse avevo riaperto il mio Cuore a dei racconti della mia famiglia - tanto fu che quella notte ebbi diversi incubi...Mi trovavo nel giardino di Villa Medici a Roma quando dopo un concerto di Maria Callas, come per misteriosa coincidenza drammatica, tutta la mia famiglia biologica, soprattutto mia sorella e mio padre, volevano strozzarmi. Faticai non poco nel liberarmi dalla loro stretta e finalmente mi apparve l'immagine che poi ho dipinto (vedi Apres Villa Medici) ma in primis con questo schizzo, che diceva: "Non ti curar di loro, TU HAI ME come struttura cosmica stellare che ti rende immortale!" Sudando disperata mi alzai dal letto per registrare questo Spirito Sacro e la mattina dopo Mario Schifano, all'epoca il mio protettore, aveva già ordinato al suo assistente di portarmi 2 tele 120x150cm su cui ho realizzato l'opera finale. Questo schizzo ha, come vedete, dei nastri bianchi che proteggono le giunture vulnerabili del mio corpo: ginocchia, anca, stomaco, fegato e spalle.
