This piece was made in a moment of deep psychological unease and was part of the first significant project I completed, beginning with the handmade papermaking process and ending with a finished series. Everything from the clothes that I wore, to social interactions, and all patterns of thought were a target of scrutiny. It took time for me to realize that we have to live our lives intuitively without a full explanation for everything we do, except for a few rotating issues which are a constant source of irritation and motivation for action.
I sought to illustrate this psychic state of how we must navigate a sea of invisible forces that are always acting on us. There are blinds spots we have to feel out and things we reflexively cling to. It became a mental map made in a period of disorientation. Feelings of bewilderment, despair, and agitation were channeled into the crumpled folds and coalesced into a picture that was useful for learning to accept a natural level of chaos and fluctuation.
