Origins II
- Cambium fiber, photograph, branch
- 84 x 18 x 4 in
- Frances Vye Wilson
Origins II was part of a community project. Neighbors were asked to save avocado pits and skins and were invited to participate in the dying of cambium fiber from the Asian mulberry tree. Three vats of dye were created to different saturations. Fiber was added, dried and then the artwork was created by Frances Vye Wilson. The branches reference
the mulberry tree and the photograph is incorporated into the piece to reference the origin of the cambium fiber used. The fiber comes directly from Laos where it is harvested by small village groups, washed, pounded (as seen in the picture). The artist has been able to source the material directly from Laos before it is shipped to Thailand and the paper industry.
Cultural Statement:
In my artwork, I have used the inner bark of the Asian mulberry tree harvested in rural Laos to convey my concepts. It was traditionally used by the indigenous mountainous tribes including the Yao people for religious rituals, making of rope and the wrapping of opium. Post-Vietnam War, it became part of an initiative to raise the standard of living of these mountain people in the making of paper products. It is an important cash crop and plays a central role in the livelihood of these small tribal groups.
