Since 2017, my painting practice has revolved around a process that begins with inkjet printed canvases with imagery from my ongoing Phenotypes series. Rather than starting with a blank canvas, I've been exploring how the act of painting can behave in response to, and in relation to, existing imagery on the surface. This is largely an extension of my longtime fascination with collage processes, in this case using the painted gestures as though they were collaged fragments added onto an image that is itself an ad hoc collage captured on a flatbed scanner. I'm also interested in the visual interplay between these two layers and how they meld together into one plain, create illusions of figure and ground, or otherwise defy expectations about what is printed and what is painted, inviting the viewer to become lost in the push and pull of the formal elements in the work.
