It thrills me to find landscapes with high chroma, where I can paint with color straight out of the tube, as intense as it can possibly be. These blueberry barrens in Franklin, Maine, called for pure pigments of red, magenta, and orange and I applied them with a wide brush in order to cover as much of the canvas as quickly as I could while the blueberry leaves were still wet from the morning rain. The green trees and the periwinkle blue mountains provided counterpoint to further brighten the reds.
